Determining if car was clocked

    Hi there,

I put a deposit on a car but after doing a little bit of digging, I think it has possibly been clocked. I'm purchasing privately. I'll give a breakdown of the situation below:

    • The car has been listed at 165k kms which is reasonable for a nine year old car

    • It passed the NCT this week and I can tell from the NCT due date checker online that its next NCT date due is genuine as the next date is Jan 2025.

    • The NCT disk states 165km and is posted as a picture on the listing

    • The mileage on the clock of the car lines up with this

Here are where my suspcisions lie:

    • I bought a GreenLight report and it claims that an Odometer reading from January had the mileage at 165k miles

    • By contrast, a Cartell report didn't report any discrepencies like this. I got this outcome: 'The National Mileage Register does not contain any records which would indicate a mileage discrepancy. Not every vehicle is listed on the NMR and you should always obtain the full service history. You may also consult the manufacturer to verify mileage readings.'

    • Oddly enough, both reports are saying the NCT is due July 2023, but perhaps this is not updated because its been done recently?

I'm just looking for advice on other ways I can confirm the mileage. Are Greenlight readings trustworthy, and where might that figure have come from? I'll need the NCT certs, but is there any way these could be falsified or edited? I really like the car otherwise and it drives smoothly, but I just want to be sure

Does it have a service history that will show mileage at each service?

I've seen lots of times incorrect km/miles unit reading taken at NCT. Last time I put mine in tester put it at xxxkms but it should have been xxxmiles, had to get him to correct it with new cert.

The reading on the odometer is the reading quoted whether kilometres or miles. No-one does conversions. If it's a 9 year old car surely it'll be kilometres. Imo the term mileage is obsolete and should not be used anymore.

Given an opportunity to clock a car your average clocker can't resist the temptation to over do it, so I'd say with average miles on the clock the vehicle is unlikely to be clocked.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I've just requested this. My impression was that it's done by a family member and there isn't too much documentation, but it'll be interesting to see what they come back with. In the listing, the flywheel, clutch and timing belt being replaced recently were mentioned. I'm also looking for the full NCT cert

On the listing and the picture of the odometer displayed in the advert the odometer was in miles, but when converted it is indicative of it being 165km which lines up.

The Greenlight report does truly say 165k miles though - could this be some sort of error with their report formatting?

There were also some discrepencies with their story and the number of owners. Both Cartell and Greenlight reports suggest it was bought at trade sale at a garage three weeks ago, whereas I've been told it's in the family for its lifespan and was bought new

If you're not sure, walk away. Plenty of cars with 165k available.

Greenlight and other history checks don’t have access to NCT mileages.

The 165k miles is most likely someone else doing a history check on the car and entered miles instead of km and that then shows up on other history checks

You can usually call/email and they will tell you the source and amend it if necessary
