Dublin On-Street Cycle Infrastructure

I decided to create a new thread for this because I dont see a suitable existing thread. These are clearly not greenways (even by the extremely broad definition which seems to exist here) so can't go in that thread. This projects aren't part of BusConnects either so that isn't the right thread. This is for general cycle improvement projects in and around Dublin.

DCC late last year started and already closed consultations on a number of Walking and Cycling Interim Schemes. I check the various council consultation sites regularly but completely missed all of these, they ran over the Christmas period and didn't see them mentioned in the media either, seem to have largely gone under the radar. I don't really see the need for interim schemes if they intend doing something else later, why not just do it once and do it right?

Recent consultations are;

North Circular Road Walking and Cycling Interim Scheme

Following North Circular Road and Portland Row from Dorset Street Lower to Amiens Street/North Strand Road. On street parking is generally retained, mostly with the cycle lane "behind" as parking protected cycle lane. What is interesting here is that they seem to be proposing Island Bus Stops but with any pedestrian crossing lights! Not sure where this design has come from or how it sits with the NTA.

Ratoath Road Walking and Cycling Interim Scheme

Complete "do minimum" approach, bollards along each side of the road to create a narrow cycle lane until Scribblestown Road. Leaving roundabouts as are, not even trying to make them cycle-friendly. There would be space to create proper cycle lanes along most of the route if they wanted to, most of the land on the western side of the road south of the canal is state/institutional land, taking a couple of metres shouldnt be a problem.

Raheny to Kilbarrack Walking and Cycling Interim Scheme

Bit of a mish/mash, some decent parts but not a lot of options given the limited space. I can't see much usage there anyway, Watermill Road would be better as people could cycle to St Annes and Bull Island or go north/south along the coastal cycle route, plus it has space to have proper segregation.

Kilbarrack Road to Oscar Traynor Road Walking and Cycling Interim Scheme

Another lazy, "do minimum" attempt at cycle infrastructure. Instead of the narrow 1.5m lane each side, a 3m wide bi-directional cycle path on one side would be a much better option.

Sandyford Clonskeagh to Charlemont Street Pedestrian & Cyclist Improvement Scheme (SC2C)

Seems a bit mad to have an interim scheme go to construction in 2023 and then a permanent scheme go to construction in Q4 2024! The permanent scheme looks good for the most part, would be better to go straight to that. Based on the timeline, people would barely have time to use the interim scheme before construction of the permanent scheme rips it all out. Also has a dedicated section on DCC website;

Sandyford Clonskeagh to City Centre, is part of the Dublin City Council (DCC) core active travel network.

Hanlon’s Corner Pedestrian & Cycling Improvements Interim Scheme

Advance improvement works ahead of the Blanchardstown to City Centre CBC Bus Connects project and the North Circular Road Walking & Cycling permanent scheme. I don't really see the point of doing just this bit with the current situation being left either side of the junction.

You should checkout the Dublin Cycling Campaign infrastructure tracker. It's a little behind on updates at the minute as it is maintained by volunteers. I have heard of DCC staff who use it to know what their colleagues are working on. =)

The map is handy for seeing what's happening in your area or are there plans to connect up existing cycle infrastructure with new cycle lanes

I came across this one for the South Dublin Co. Co. area. Is there an official one for the other counties? (Not to take away from the Dublin Cycling Campaign one which is excellent)
