2020 Passat Upgrade

2020 Business 150bhp with 50k on the clock and in good condition, technology pack added if it matters, Pyrite Silver Metallic.

Upgrade with VW is the Arteon. Priced out of everything else bar Skoda Superb. Going down the estate route this time and the boot on the Arteon does the job. Can't think of anything else to jump to?

One question, what should I expect the dealer to give me for my own, ballpark?

    Thanks

    27000/28000 against a new Arteon.

Have a look at the new Octavia, very similar size internally to your Passat and a lot cheaper than the Arteon

I traded in 2016 rline passat for 2019 rline arteon with sunroof.

sorriest thing I ever did was driving passats for 22 years.

arteon very hard if that makes sense as its sports model so feel every bump on road as tyres slim, leather seats a pain dont hold you as comfortable as material sports seats.

If your a passenger theres no handle on roof and if you're like me resting elbow on window to roof while travelling my arm too long & I'm only 5'3.

went into dealer in Jan to order brand new passat only to be told they stopped making them last year. I'll prob trade to a 21 second hand next year.

Ah for God sake..... This lad is coming out of a nice spec Passat and all on for an arteon.

Id bet good money that he wouldnt take an Octavia at any money.

    Neither would I 😂

If you liked the Passat then you will like the Arteon as it's basically a Passat in a much nicer looking dress.

    Some other options:

    Peugeot 508 SW:

    Skoda Octavia combi RS:

Haha he’s coming out of a Passat, not a Bentley but maybe you think VW is more premium or something?

Having changed from a Passat to an Octavia myself, there's no comparison tbh. Give me a Passat any day.

Thanks for all the replies. I have been Octavia before, and I did seriously consider it or the Superb.

The Passat is coming back into production in 2 years, but what form, etc, who knows? I need to change now unfortunately. VW Dealers from Ennis, Limerick, Galway, Balina, Tipp (for what its worth) offered trade in range from 26k to 28.5k. (Obviously wants my business but must have a buyer lined up possibly). I assume it will sell about €31k on the forecourts so 28.5 might be the ceiling as not one of the others have come close to it yet.

The RLine wheels make a huge difference to the ride/handling. 18's is what it was made for. Drove all 3, 18/20 and the 20in wheels have no right being on that car unless going in a straight line, just for show imo.

Have all my quotes now and of course, a kicker, found out today VW increasing price by 3% for anything that lands after 1st week April. Not a chance of getting any Arteon before that deadline.

28.5k might not be a bad trade in offer considering this main dealer wanted 29k for this one:

Saw that last night, cheapest 150 Business in the country it seems.

VW is more premium than a Skoda. Bottom tier = skoda, middle is VW, top is Audi.

If I was upgrading the Passat, I would be after the A4 rather than the Arteon. Similar money

It was like that maybe 20 years ago but Skoda are competing head on with Volkswagen for years. Audi is premium money for basically the same thing under the hood. Skoda is certainly no longer a 'bottom tier' car and often are more expensive that the competition (Evyaq vs ID4).

I drive a 221 Volkswagen and have use of a 202 Skoda and the Skoda is better finished and seems better quality overall

The Octavia is not a direct Passat competitor.

There is no comparison between them tbh.

It's not about vw v Skoda or where the brands sit against each other, it's best part of a class below Passat. If you had suggested he got a golf, I'd have said the same thing.

You have the arteon which is at a minimum a very premium.passat so all in all, you are suggesting a car a class and a half below what he was looking at.

According to Skoda, the cheapest Octavia is 30k with the arteon starting at 47k. So no, Im not a VW snob, it's just a simple fact that the Octavia is not in the same category at all.

I hope you enjoy your Skoda and all that but why the need to push them on everyone.

It's been a trend here in the past where no matter what someone said they were looking for, someone would suggest an Octavia.

    Golf is 4284mm x 1789. Octavia is 4689 x 1829. Passat is 4774 x 1832. Arteon is 4862 x 1871

Octavia is a lot bigger than a Golf, and indeed a Passat is closer in size to an Octavia than an Arteon - which you are correct is really in a different class to the Passat. The Arteon indeed it has few direct competitors - maybe the Stinger or the 508 or potentially the A5.

Think if I was in the OP's shoes with that strong trade-in value I would be going Arteon Elegance or else holding onto my own for another year

The Arteon has a serious image problem. Its for wannabe questionables that cant afford but want an Audi RS. The old cc was the same. A rebadged passat with a diesel engine now driving by N plate drivers soon to be the realm of the Arteon.

If I was the OP with the budget for the vw arteon, I would buy an Audi A4 estate 2.0d/190bhp for very similar money.

Assume its a new 2023 buy.....otherwise I would go down a year or two/three even and get the A6!

Maybe, possibly as good as the Octavia!

Cheeky, I've been a VW woman all my driving life and spent 37.5k on my Arteon so can afford to, I just never even looked at another brand as VW has never let me down and so much space compared to Audi and its most definitely not like a cc passat. Its all the young ones on N plates driving Mercedes nowadays

Space in the shooting brake, especially with seats down is key to my choice. Probably go with the RLine Lapiz with the Sunroof, to try and grab that resale value down the line. €4k in the difference between RLine and Elegance and the Lapiz Blue seems to be the main reason others are getting the RLine. Had all kinds of silver in the last decade, basically down to supply. Fancied the Blue(s) to match the other weekend runner. But, a lot of negativity about the Kingfisher Blue which was my 2nd choice.

Laharts in Kilkenny look to have a Lapiz Blue estate in stock if its not too far.

Ordering a month too late but anyhow - Arteon SB Lapiz Blue, Hitch, Sunroof, DSG Diesel 150 €61k, Trade in €28,800 so costing me €32,200, would not go any lower so did the deal. Hopefully in 2/3 years it is still worth a chunk of that!

They getting pricey too like everything else.

I think it the arteon range is missing a larger engined phev to compete powerwise with bmw in phev form.

I think the current phev is 218 bhp 1.4 petrol.

A 2.0 petrol phev with maybe 260 or 270 bhp would be a lovely machine.

Yes but then you would be well into a very very nice BMW. 530e is 64k

To be a bit fair the 530e that starts at 66k is a SE saloon. To get the 530e M Sport Touring (which is a bit more comparitable in terms of model type to the OP's Arteon estate) your starting at 73.5k. And that's before you hit the options list.

Yes but the OP's car exists in the real world. The 530e comment was in response to the hypothetical PHEV Arteon with 250+ bhp.....which if it existed would be more than 61k.....anyways...it doesn't yet

But the 530e M sport touring is an awesome car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

VW have no real interest in developing newer PHEVs I'd say, the 1.4 version is all you will get and I'd say that will soldier on, they didn't even redevelope a PHEV with with the newer and more efficent 1.5 litre TSI engine. I'd say they are more focused and selling their ID models.

Personally I think all these PHEVs are just a stop gap or bridge for complying with current emmission regulations and mabye for those who want the security of being able to rely on an ice engine for further range. Problem is that governments are taking away the incentives for them and newer emmission regulations going forward are not going to favor them. I think as ranges get better on full EVs over the next few years or decade these PHEVs will be obsolete.

Being discussed (Autoexpress) they are launching the 2023 Tiguan with a new 1.5 PHEV with 238 bhp and a range up to 100km - that would be a decent option if it actually arrives.

Audi's 2.0 phev starting with 299bhp (badged 50 TFSIe or 55 TFSIe) is a 530e / 540e competitor but I presume would simply make the Arteon too expensive. 61k for a 150bhp is already big money but its a lovely car

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,226 ✭✭✭Stallingrad

Assuming you own the car you're trading it's costing you €61K, the cost to change is €32,200. They are two very different things!
