I did a small room recently with joint compound that I rolled on. Came out pretty well, but there's definitely a learning curve. Aside from the joint compound, I needed an extension poll for the roller, a deep pile roller head, a taping knife, a mud pan, a sanding head for the extension poll and lots of sandpaper. I wanted to do it anyway to learn how to do it in future, but it took a few goes and some trial and error before getting it to a place I was happy with.

I used the polycell 1 from woodies a few years ago. Skimmed a corner box section. Floor to ceiling about 1ft x2. Put it on in a few layers & sanded it smooth after.

It looks OK from a distance but up close not as good. Found it hard to get the ceiling edge right. It kind of sagged as it was drying. I'd do it again myself but would be trying a different product if I was.
