Painting a stone fireplace

Hello, We have a stone fireplace with grey and salmon coloured stones. We would like to paint it but need some advice please. It's not an open fire, we have an electric heater installed instead, so the heat won't be that great. We would like to keep it looking like stone, if you know what I mean. Is this possible? If so…

I'm interested in this one too as I also have the wall tiled around my fireplace with grey and salmon stones. Wondering about painting them red, or perhaps white.
