Skim Coat on foam based tile backer board??

    Hello,

    redoing bathroom.

Lower half of 1 stud wall is removed, leaving top half with plasterboard+skim coat finish already in place.

I want to install foam based backer board on the lower half once studs are repaired, for the soon to be laid tiles.

But the backer board will be higher than the tiles.

So I'm going to have to skim coat the top edge of the backer board up to the (already there) plaster board skim coat!!

Do I need some sort of bonding coat before skimcoating?

Also, will the joint between old skim coat and new skim coat crack in time? and how do i avoid this?

thanks in advance for any advice.

I'd use bonding. It should blank out the roughness of the backer board.

Use fibre glass scrim and adhesive on the joint between the backer and original board, not sure that the paper scrim is rated for damp locations.
