Gas Meter Battery Gone - how is usage calculated?

Received gas bill which was estimated. When I opened meter to check it I then noticed the battery must have expired as digital reader not displaying anything. Logged the fault with Electric Ireland and someone should be out to replace it in the next week. I did get a text from Gas Networks couple weeks ago to say they would be out to change the battery as it was due to expire.

My question is, does anyone know how my usage will be calculated whilst no battery? Is there a backup quietly recording in background? My concern would be that Electric Ireland might estimate usage during this period and I haven't had heating running as my last bill was so high...

Any insight from people who are actual gas Networks engineers or anyone who knows would be much appreciated.

    How old is the meter?

I had a meter replaced about two years ago. Mine does not display unless a button is pressed and then a second bouton to update readings.

if your meter is faulty , you should report it to Gas Networks Ireland. They maintain the gas supply irrespective of your supply company.
