USB and Hard Drive died, i need help to bring them back to life

I need help to bring my hard drive and usb key back to life, because they have all of my college work past and present on them.
The light is on, on the usb key, but nobody's home. I think it could have been damaged by a little piece of plastic that broke off on the inside.
The hard drive was fried, according to another source. That was probably partically my fault, it was in a bad way inside the box and i made the ultimate bad decision to hoover the big dust balls out of it.
I can't afford to pay big mega bucks though.
