Just discovered my boot doesn't stay open by itself. Do they do much in the boot for NCT and would this be an immediate fail? I would have to tell them this when they nct it for fear they would get decapitated. If it failed on loads though it would be a waste to get it fixed first as it is an old car.

Once the locking mechanism is working it will pass. I'd guess the gas strutts are gone, they perish over time, not very expensive to replace, perhaps €30 each side or less.

Beware if trying to change struts yourself they are very dangerous to DIY. Often one of two goes and the other one still has massive energy stored and may injure you when you try and remove it.

You can DIY once you understand how to safely remove them.

Dangerous is a big word. Of course you have to open the bootlid as far as it goes, but the strut doesn't go any further than that.

It is however a two-person job to replace them, so one can hold the bootlid open while the other replaces the strut. Unless you have a broomstick exactly the right length, and a way to PROPERLY secure that in place, which often is not the case, hence the second person.

Hes referring to boot lid struts.

    Not the suspension or sprints.
