Dont Be at It

Hi all,

I'm looking for some suggestions for a family car with two kids under 3.. Commute of 2 hours round trip, two or three times a week. Short 5/10 minute spins every day to shops, creche,etc. One long trip to the west of ireland with all the baggage once every 3 weeks or so.

Hoping for something from 2018 onwards. Budget of 20-25k.

Is this doable?

Am I realistically looking at a diesel for my needs? Was hoping to avoid. Was so hoping to avoid an SUV to try and be a bit more eco friendly. :)

Also, what are your thoughts on buying 4-5 year old cars? Our current car (vw golf) was 5ish years when we got it in 2016 and we ended up spending a small fortune on it... New clutch, new injector, suspension.. Were we just unlucky or is this to be expected with a car that age?

Well from an ECO perspective, the Outlander can be got with Plug-In Hybrid drivetrain, So if you had a home charger, you could get about 30 to 40km on pure electric (i.e. the shops/creche/local days). Then burn the fossil fuels on the longer trips.

I wouldn’t see any issue with diesel given your driving patterns.

Ref buying a 4 year old car, I think you were unlucky. I bought mine (Skoda) at that age and have it another 4 years, outside of servicing its cost me a few hundred in very minor things, that’s covering 30k a year minimum.

Good shout. I'll do a bit of research on this. My understanding was that such hybrids have quite poor fuel efficiency, but that may have been the earlier generations.

Prius. Definitely worth considering. I ran a Gen 2 for 5 years. Always got 50mpg, short runs or long ones.
