En-Suite Fan Noise

Had the ensuite bathroom done a while ago and a new extractor fan was installed on the exterior wall

All good, apart from the fact that the fan makes an annoying squeaking noise when it's windy outside and the fan is off.

It's not the blades of the fan turning in the wind.

Can be slightly annoying at night, anybody experience similar and if so, what was the fix?

    Thanks

Is the noise coming from the external (three) flaps?

Sorry, I don't know what that is!

The fan is high on the wall, right up at the ceiling, so on the exterior, it comes out via the soffit (think that's the correct term!)

I've taken the vent cover off at the soffit and had a rummage around, removed some torn / broken tubing that was, I presume supposed to connect the fan to the outlet in the soffit but wasn't doing so.

Thought that would solve it but it didn't

Sounds weird and hard to envisage an extractor fan that's mounted on the wall but then extracted via the soffit. The noise is of lesser importance now than the broken/torn tubing as that implies all the humid air from the ensuite is extracted into your attic space. Can you post a couple of pictures of the extractor from inside and outside.

In terms of the noise in the wind it sounds like you need a cowl to prevent direct wind from blowing into your vent pipe. Often extractor fans will have a one way valve which is just light plastic that bends open when the fan is on so I suspect this is what's rattling in the wind.

I removed the fan and found the below membrane right behind the blades of the fan.

I'm guessing this is in place possibly to prevent the fan turning when a breeze enters from the outside and in my case was causing a squeak.

Anyway, removed it and the fan is now silent, although it does move when there is a strong breeze but it's perfectly silent, so that will do for me.

my guess, and its only a guess, is that that ring of foam is a protector for protection during storage and transportation and should have been removed upon installation.

As someone else said, the vent cover on the outside wall usually has movable flaps that blow open when the fan is on and fall closed (to prevent air coming back in) when the fan is off. I've two fans, and in both, the flaps are squeeky and flap a bit in strong breezes.
