Clock spring replacement - VW Passat B6 (2010 model)

Late 2009 VW Passat B6 (2010 model with Common Rail engine).

Error message - 'Airbag Fault'.  Issue occurred when turning the steering wheel to full lock while parking. Click noise heard from the steering column area. Multifunction steering wheel buttons not responsive. Same after restarting car & driving for a while.

Suspecting the clock spring has gone (based on what I read online in some VW forums). Got 1 quote of €420+ for parts & labour (part = €360). Waiting on other quotes. Any recommendations of where best to source this part new? Not sure I'd like to risk a scrap yard for an item so closely linked to the airbag.

Seems I need to get the part code via VCDS (aka VagCom) first to confirm the exact part that needs to be replaced. Does anybody know where in the VCDS menu this can be found? Would VCDS also show the part manufacturer?

Update: removed the steering wheel column & the part number on the clockspring (aka squib) is 5K0953569AB. I want to get a new OEM part rather than used (for safety....airbag related afterall).

VW main dealer confirms part 5K0953569AB has been superceeded twice with latest part number being 5K0953569AS & quoted Quoted €315+vat (i.e. €387 inc vat). Motorfactor quoted €567+vat.

A quick Google shows other retailers are selling 5K0953569AS a bit cheaper. E.g.

Can anyone here recommend any other retailers from experience for sourcing this part that would be cheaper than VW main dealer?

Would have no issue installing a second hand part personally, clock spring is a mechanical part that either works or it doesnt and is very obvious from a failure perspective. Is your horn malfunctioning along with your other steering wheel controls?

VW's go through these like sweets, it's definitely not worth going second hand, also they can fail one trace at a time so maybe the up button on the steering wheel doesn't work, or two buttons don't etc

Thanks for the reply. In the end I ordered the part from a VW main dealer & will have a local indy mechanic fit it.
