Why do people in waterford not drink alcohol ? and pay stupid price for it like everywhere else ? This hits everyone in the pocket

They certainly do and everyone is paying more for their few cans or bottle of wine.

If it's any help there is a long running thread about MUP in After Hours.

I haven't seen any price increase on alcohol in the last year.

The whiskey I like is still €35 and the utterly delicious valpocella ripasso in Aldi is still €9.99.

Only the loss leader offers really got affected and the decent quality stuff has barely moved in price.

    So no problem for you.

On the other hand a lot of people who enjoy

other kinds of drinks have seen considerable price hikes.

A lot of them have been introduced to a better quality and better tasting options.

€10 for valpocella Rispasso is a steal and substantially better than anything at €8

    In your opinion.

Lots of people were perfectly happy with what they were buying.

And the relationship between quality and price in this country is not guaranteed.

Whats happened is that perfectly drinkable options have been removed.

And a lot of them were quite happy with nice mainstream drinkable wines that were available on offer in the ,€5 -€6 range before MUP.

Believe it or not they don't appreciate paying 80-100 % extra because a coalition of publicans and neo prohibitionists persuaded a bunch of idiot politicians that it would be better for them.

you need to learn to use a calculator.

Those cheap bottle of wine are now €7.40. They €5 bottles of plonk are no longer on sale. Some of the €6 are now €7.40. That's a 23.6% increase. Way off your sensationalist 80-100%

    Eh can you?

And if the cheapest bottle of wine is now €7.40, up from €5, that's an increase of 48%.

You can't buy the €5 bottle of 14% Shiraz anymore. So how much are you paying for a 14% bottle now?

A 14% bottle of wine is now €8.28 minimum, that's an increase of 66%. Assuming you can even get a bottle at that price when you want it, which is not a given.

And you seem to be advocating they switch to a €10 bottle which would be a 100% increase.

Oh I learned a long time ago.

I can even read price tags on shelves and do mental arithmetic.

You are not allowing for the fact that we can no longer stock up on decent wines when they are on offer.

Furthermore the drinks trade are playing their customers by increasing the price of middle range wines to maintain a differential compared to the previously cheap stuff which is now at an artificially elevated price due to the nonsensical MUP.
