Rent Tax Credit question

might bed a bit specific, but if anyone knows would appreciate it :)

been renting a room as primary resident since 1st august.

was on illness benefit during part of august, then job seekers from september end of october- workered nov-dec. along with previouslu from january till august

would the rent tax credit be able to be included on the tax from earlier when even tho i wasn't actually renting or only from nov-dec (assuming illness benefit/dole isnt applicable anyway)?

income tax return for people who received welfare isn't for another week but just thinking ahead

As I see it if, across the whole year, you have a tax liability on your cumulative income from all sources, you should get the credit or a portion of it, if you meet the criteria.

The credit due to a claimant is equal to the lower of:

1) the total rent payments made by the claimant during the tax year at 20%, and

2) the specified amount at 20%.

The 'specified amount' is €2,500 for a single person, so item 2 is valued at €500.

In the OP's case, once the rental payments for 2022 exceed €2500, s/he'll get the full €500 credit. Assuming that the OP has paid at least €500 in PAYE for all of 2022 (which seems likely given the working details), s/he'll get the full credit refunded once the return for 2022 is processed.

dam, just found out landlord isn't registered with rtb or whatever. we're all renting individual rooms off him independently in a housem he doesn't live. i'd imagine that doesn't count as the renting a room situation were it doesn't have to be registered

Did anyone find out what to do if landlord isn't registered for RTB.

Myself and my partner rented a house for €900 a month from August 2021 to 31 August 2022.

By my reckoning the €500 tax credit would be worth €200 refund each so a decent amount of money.

Following a search on twitter I found that you can just leave the RTB number blank as it's optional on the ROS website. It then just asks for the landlords name. You don't have to give their address, that's also optional.

As you paid €900 per month in 2022 - 8 months x €900 = €7,200.00 divided by 2 people = €3,600

You both need to submit your individual income tax returns for 2022 to claim the rent relief credit and include the maximum allowable amount for a single person of €2,500 on each return giving you both Rent Relief in the amount of €500

Rent Relief, as with all tax credits are non refundable reliefs which can be offset against income tax paid in a tax year.

was approved the rent tax credit in the end & got statement of liability, how long did it take for others to drop in your account?

I did get it after, and for the full €500. I had miscalculated the amount due as I thought it was tax relief like medical expenses.

It's not my fault the landlord didn't register. That's their choice. If the government brought in this credit to catch landlords that's between the government and the landlords. Myself and my partner can't afford to let €1000 go a begging.

100% some folks are in a more delicate situation whereby the landlord not being registered is advantageous - ie myself paying far below market. Happy you got it back!

Has anyone tried to input the RTB registration number on ROS? The section to input the number seems to only take 10 digits or characters whereas the number provided by the RTB in the issued letter is of the format RT-xxxx-xxxxxxxx. So that's 12 digits if you remove the leading RT. I've tried calling the RTB but its a 40min wait time. The response from revenue is basically that there is a standard number that they accept and to contact the RTB or landlord. Maybe just try and leave the section blank as someone above suggested it was optional?

so registered for the 2023 tax credit, which i assumed would just ad to ongoing tax credits for each week but then gave a summary of owed 20% for jan-march, anyone know if this goes straight into your bank account like the 2022 one is it adjusted for your ongong tax credits?
