Importing cattle

I can't remember whether I've asked before, so I will now, or again, if that's the case!

What's the story with importing cattle from the UK now post brexsh1t? If I could source some there what's the plan after, I'd need a haulier obviously, but what's required of the seller re testing and me re importing?

Don't know that much bar instead of a blue card for that animal, you'll receive a red card.

And red card animals, especially from the UK may go back to the UK to be slaughtered when the time comes.

I don't have details - department probably best place. I know a few ped breeders who have bought in Uk recently and they had to wait around 90 days due to testing isolation etc before they could import the animal. I saw in journal during summer gigginstown bought a good few angus females in from Uk.

Afaik there are a couple of factories that slaughter red card animals but unfortunately they pay far below factory prices.

Very risky at the minute with bvd rules after changing re export since July. We bought an Angus heifer in Scotland in March and got her delivered in June. An agent collected her in Scotland, imported her and we collected her off him in Lisburn. He sorted all the paperwork. Then department came out removed her tags and retagged her with Irish tags. He blooded her and put ivomec pour on on her for warbles as the UK still have them. I know a neighbour bought a heifer in July from Scotland and still hasn't got her

Even we went to view Angus cattle in Rory bests last night up north. For a sale which started online today. We spoke to him and he said there was only 1 wasnt eligible for export due to bvd regulations. Today only 2 females are actually eligible . The rules seem all up in the air. So be careful

It appears I will need to reapply my efforts on sourcing domestic stock, but ACRES has made a hoor out of that. Another issue I found is the cost of getting a UK registered animal registered with an Irish society, it's significant.

I looked at it last year and it was cost 🚫

I was buying a Ped Dex bull calf at 1k£ and between vet work there, haulage etc he was going to be close to 2.5k euro.

The vet work alone was £600+ and a lad I know who hauls cattle out said there was a different licence to haul in.

Dept of Agri quarantine after coming in for 30 days.

My DVO couldn't even tell me what the exact rules were, just highly discouraging the plan.

We didn't have to quarantine, £450 we gave the lad who imported her. That included vet work

Ok, thanks for the comments, it looks like I'll have to go back to the drawing board. I can see the merit in importing a bull or specific females but...... This looks like it'll add too much to the purchase price of the stock tbh.

Have you thought about importing embryos? I know you want to get up and running asap but you may not be able to go with your chosen breed. You could compromise a bit with a longer term goal of eventually getting the breed you want albeit taking the chance with embryos.

However, artificial insemination is allowed; (b) Reproduction shall not be induced or impeded by treatment with hormones or other substances with similar effect, except as a form of veterinary therapeutic treatment in case of an individual animal; (c) Other forms of artificial reproduction, such as cloning and embryo transfer, shall not be used; (d) The choice of breeds shall be appropriate to the principles of organic production, shall ensure a high standard of animal welfare and shall contribute to the prevention of any suffering and to avoiding the need for the mutilation of animals.

There is no difference in haulage in or out, a health cert is required and no transportation is simple and cost was hardly going to be 900 euros, all it takes is a bit of research . As for the DVO it would be simple to ring the import section in Kildare street to get what is required and use a haulier who does this work all the time.

why did you not import the animal directly from Scotland and why quarantine and then have to import out of the north.extra vet work and costs.

We collected the animal in Lisburn with all paperwork completed from Scotland to import her to the south, we didn't have to quarantine her. The reason we collected her in Lisburn is that is where he was meeting other farmers who had imported cattle he had on his load.

The paperwork is usually from farm to farm, stopping in the north would be a no if stopped the route plan would show delivery to direct farm in the south.
