Newborn Passport query

Howaya, bit of a strange one. We have travel booked to leave the country in may, baby Due end of feb. This is our first, I guess my question is what are the chances of getting a birth certificate and passport in time? DFA currently states that waiting times for new passport are around 20 days which leaves us plenty of time. But I’m just after reading you can’t attend an appointment to register the birth until the baby is 3 weeks old. Meaning we will have to wait 3 weeks to be able to get the birth certificate which would cut things fine as we can’t apply for a passport without it.

Is the 3 week wait mandatory? as it says there’s no 3 week wait if it’s a home birth, I can’t work out the difference.

Any advice or experiences would be greatly received, thanks a mil!

I think you'll be very tight for time and possibly looking at June/July at the earliest. We got a new born passport 2022 and it took roughly 5 weeks from submitting the application which was fine but the real problem is actually getting the birth cert. In 2021/22 there was significant delays due to covid backlog and anecdotally lots of people having kids during covid, it took us about 3 months to get the birth cert and friends of ours took 4+ months but the mother was French so it delayed things a little. I remember ringing the Department of Social Protection a few times trying to find out what was going on, for example if I rang in mid March they would say they were currently processing applications from first week of January and we would just have to wait. Perhaps they have cleared the backlog now and things are running more smoothly

So the 3 week thing is to allow the hospital time to put through their records into the department to allow you to register the birth. I'm pretty sure from recollection that it's "up to" 3 weeks. You could be lucky & it goes through quickly or else it could be the 3 weeks.

We were pre-covid and we were able to register when he was about 8 days old. We did it in person so got the certs there & then but that was when there was walk in appointments available. I'm not sure if they're back to that yet. Also applied for a passport pre-Covid and it was about 2 weeks all in to get that sorted. You might be cutting it fine especially if baby is overdue which happens a lot.
