The new year, 2023, marks the 30th anniversary of the decriminalisation of gay sex in Ireland after a 15 year legal battle led by Senator David Norris and former President Mary Robinson.

2023 is also the 40th anniversary of the first major gay rights protest in Dublin following the disgraceful outcome of the trial of the four men who murdered closeted gay man Declan Flynn in Fairview Park in 1982.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of our accession to the European Union, membership of which enabled Ireland to grow and modernise as a country and society and facilitated greater equality for our LGBT brethren.

Below are some photos of events in Irish LGBT history and our struggle for acceptance. Please feel free to add your own! 😊👍

Just to point out that it’s not ‘former Senator David Norris’ - he is still currently a Senator!

1994 I took part in the gay pride march event as a teen, in Dublin. Alas I didn't have a camera. I think that was the last one I marched in too because in later years it became more about the after events for me, which were quite wild. Well if you can call packed nightclubs wild.

I was listening to veteran broadcaster Steve Allen last year and he said he went into London for Pride and he didn't see the word Gay/Homosexual anywhere. How things have changed.

Pride doesn't mean anything to me anymore. All I see is gay men being represented by Drag Queens in the media. It's all very odd.
