Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Toyota recall to replace EGR cooler - since done no signal on radio

Hi I drive a 171 D Toyota Versa - Diesel - I got a letter from Toyota 28/10/22 that car recalled to replace EGR cooler and I should take to local toyota dealer. So I took it to Denis O'Mahony off the m50 in November. Since the work was done to replace EGR cooler - I have no signal on the radio, the economy mode no longer comes on at traffic lights when car stopped and engine running. And the beep sound that I crossing a white line when driving - seems to only work sometimes. These were 100% all working before EGR cooler replaced. The car has just 70km millage and is like new. I took car back to Denis O'Mahony mid December - they said replacing EGR cooler could not cause issues I'm having ... They not going to help me resolve issues unless I pay myself...

What should I do ? Or any person have similar experience and how resolved ? Thanks...

Thanks - I did and took back to Toyota garage today. They again saying my issues not related to recall and asking to. put in a new battery (180 euro) to solve eco issue and replace the whole headset on the radio cost 800 euro. So I need. to pay. at least 980 to get my car back to condition I sent it into the garage for the recall. The customer service guy said I could not prove the car did not have these issues when taken in for recall. But I'm 100% certain I did not have these issues. Do I pay the money to fix issues or. what can I do ? I phoned/emailed Toyota Ireland but getting no response. Thanks

Keep phoning Toyota Ireland until you speak to someone, get the name of

the person you spoke to and make a note of it.

Thank you - that is not a bad idea - and I hope to do it. I just rang and the after sales director not available - but I will call office a few times today...I think the way I've been treated is terrible - I done nothing wrong - put my car in for recall with all working and car returned with above issues.

Got a letter emailed from Toyota today => attached

They say they will do. nothing for my issues - which were. 100% caused by REcall. Any advice ? Thks

On the face of it Toyota are correct in that the EGR fix should have no connection with the faults you are seeing.

Random electrical faults like this could be due to a dodgy battery.

I'd see if a new battery fixed the faults first, then argue the garage.

Your letter seems to be from the garage though, not from Toyota Ireland.

Sorry, I see the letter is from Toyota copying the garage.

Another thing is to request the moderator to move this to the main motors forum, you might get more responses.

Moderator can you please move this thread to the main motors forum

Correct, it is highly unlikely that replacing the EGR caused the battery to go and the radio to stop working.

But (and I'm playing devils advocate here) is it possible the guy in O Mahony's left something lose/not connected properly?

I would be trying a battery first though and I'd contact Toyota Ireland to see can they offer good will. I know a battery is

a consumable but if you don't ask you don't get.

Thanks for replay - my car is still in Denis Mahony & I just phoned to see if they tried a new battery and if this resolved issues. They said they tried this it resolved economy issue but not resolve radio issue. On goodwill - garage said they give me radio head unit at cost but still probably be 850 + 200 for a new battery. I will need to pay this amount to get my car back to the state it was when I dropped it into garage for recall repair.

Sounds like the battery was on the way out then.

Push Toyota Ireland for goodwill on the radio, telling them you have no issue's paying for a battery

as they are a consumable item. Would you go 50/50 on a radio?

Five years for a battery would be about average lifespan, stop start batteries seem to wear out more quickly.

The radio problem is very odd. Does everything appear to work but there is no sound from radio?

  • Registered Users Posts: 614 ✭✭✭harry999

The radio works - but signal not good - so as signal goes and come's the volume on the radio will go up and down - very annoying to be listening to when driving. In some locations e.g Mullingar town the radio would not pick up any station...

I would pay for battery myself as I think that is my issue - its old. But the radio is the main issue...and something I feel I should not have to pay for... I have asked the garage for estimate of work that needs to be done to get car in same working order as when dropped in for recall - so I will see what this like...

My thinking was that I gave my car to Toyota to do the recall and two people can swear that radio was perfectly working - and immediately when returned. those two people can swear radio had current issues - I thought Toyota had responsibility to at least give back car in condition they got it - but maybe this thinking incorrect and unfortunately things happen as in this case and not much can be done, but I just fix them...What people think?? Thks

Any other advice on above ? Thks

Did you go to Toyota Ireland looking for goodwill on the radio?

Small claims court is another option too. A lot of cases I've been involved in

normally goes in favour of the plaintiff. Judges seem to take a dislike to garages

and manufacturers for some reason. It can be a long drawn out process too.

I think you are fighting a losing battle with Toyota Ireland tbh. You're already on the back foot because some issues that you claimed were due to the recall were down to the battery being worn. In any case the work the dealer carried out should have no effect whatsoever on the radio reception.

In relation to the radio, I wouldn't be in any rush to replace the radio head. I doubt very much that it is broken. My first approach would be to check the cable from the aerial to the radio. It is possible to have a loose connection, or more likely, a bad connection due to corrosion. If you can't fix it yourself Id try and track down a good car electrician with the specialised equipment for faultfinding electronic equipment. Most garages don't have this equipment, or expertise.

Just to add that I had a similar issue with a car radio, many years ago. The issue was corrosion where the aerial was mounted on the car body. If the radio head is actually faulty a electronics repair shop, if you can find one, should be able to repair it. Failing that I'd look online for a replacement.

The Garage are suppose to give me a quote to fix the radio - but I still waiting for it since last Wednesday. Should I email Toyota Ireland and ask for Goodwill on radio repair ? Thks

I don't think you'll get anywhere. A independent auto electrician is your best bet to keep costs down.

  • Registered Users Posts: 614 ✭✭✭harry999

Yea - do you know an independence auto electrician  in Dublin ? Thks

No, maybe someone on the other forum can recommend one.

    Not your ornery onager

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,139 ✭✭✭GavPJ

Pick up the phone and speak to the person who wrote the letter.

It is easy for them to reply to an email saying no. If you don't ask, you don't get.

  • Registered Users Posts: 614 ✭✭✭harry999

I asked there and told no goodwill on the radio...

Forget about the radio, it is ancient technology. Hook up your phone to the Bluetooth and play the radio through data. TuneIn is a good app that has every station you could want.

Also, I'm sure the mechanics here could confirm, but it is surprisingly common for two unrelated events/breakdowns to occur around the same time. Murphy's Law and all that.

Sing that!!!! When I was in the garage trade you would not believe the amount

of people that would ring to complain about a bulb going or them getting a puncture

not long after the car being serviced! I don't miss them idiots!!! :-)
