Classic Car Registration

My Uncle passed away a few years ago and my Auntie has recently offered me his Triumph Stag. What would the procedure be for registering it in my name? The car has been in a garage since the mid 1990's and not in use. It would have been registered in his name and nothing has been altered since. Thanks in advance to anyone able to help!

Its no different to any other change of ownership.

Hopefully the old log book will still be in your Aunt's home. She can sign a letter to you gifting you the car and you can both co-sign the change of ownership on the log book and send it to Shannon, where they will issue a new VLC for the car, in your name.

Bear in mind, she will only be able to sign the car over to you, once your late Uncle's estate has been settled. If it already has, then fire away.

You should check out the inheritance/gift tax implications, but as the threshold between Aunt/Uncle and Niece/Nephew is €32,000, I think it very unlikely that an old Stag, out of use for two decades, will be worth anything like that. More likely €5-10,000, at best.

    Thats not how it works.

If the OP fails to pay market value for the purchase and its discovered, he could be penalised.

Receiving the car as a gift, so long as its below the threshold - which a Stag will be - is perfectly fine and there is no tax owed.

If logbook is missing you can apply for replacement logbook
