Do I have to replant ?

I got a letter today from the department of agriculture etc telling me they carried out a license utilisation inspection on the 11/10/2022 and I must replant by the 31/05/2023. The total area of land I have is an area of 4.40 hectares of which I was only able to plant 2.3 hectares the rest is unusable. It runs alongside a main road and is 1.5 M to 4 M below the road. I luckily got permission from the neighbouring farmer two years ago to cross his land to cut and remove it but now I am landlocked as the farm has sold and who knows in 30 years will my children be able to cross it to harvest the timber. Is there a legal requirement to plant it or is there a fine if I don’t ? I won’t be alive to harvest it, the land is falling down hill to a small stream and it’s not much use to anyone. Can anyone give me advice as to what I should do. Please help.

Yes you will have to replant. Under the conditions of issuing the felling license you must replant the same area. Have a read of your license and it should be there.

Because they have inspected it they will come back and issue fines eventually.

Unfortunately after waiting 2 years the cost of replanting is going to be a little higher as there is competing vegetation.

Of course with the setbacks etc you won't be planting the exact area again but it will need planting.

Check out your reforestation plan in your felling license or license application and it will go through most of the setbacks, the species to be replanted and all that.

Nearly best to engage a forester to get it done but just be careful, the cheap price cuts corners and after 30 years your next generation might have a crop of bushes and dirt.
