Whats this plastic strip for in my coffee bag?

    I bought a packet of "Soma" coffee the other day and opened it today.

    Inside the packet above (and separate to) the plastic ventilation thing there is a plastic strip that looks like what you would see on resealable packets.

    As you can see on the picture there isnt anything on the other side to seal against. I cannot think of any logical reason for it, anyone here know whats its purpose is?
