Hyundai Tuscon 161 - Engine died while driving

    Hyundai Tucson Comfort 5DR, 2016

    Body: 5 Door Mpv

    Engine CC: 1685

    Fuel: Diesel

    ================================

Car lost power while driving and had to pull into side of the road

Mechanic sent injectors off for testing

    All 4 are blocked solid

Has anyone seen this - apparently it is very rare

Guy testing injectors has suggested it could cost €4k to get it back on the road 😒

Without knowing what caused the problem -

    (1) Do i replace the 4 injectors and hope for the best?

    (2) Do i replace the 4 injectors/pump and all the fuel system components?

would 2nd hand parts be ok? - trying to keep the cost down

Any advice would be very welcome

    Thanks

    Forgot to ask.....

Is it worth trying to go down the insurance road

What are the chances of this being covered?

zero chance of it being covered unfortunately

its a bit strange that all 4 would go from working to blocked solid, if there’s something between the tank and injectors that caused this, then I can’t see that replacing 4 injectors fixes the root cause, I’m not a mechanic though.

€4K seems excessive if it’s just 4 injectors he’s doing.

    Thanks Colm

€4k is worst case "back on the road" scenario with possible replacement of entire fuel system

Do you know anyone else around with a similar problem? could it have been caused by contaminated fuel? It might be worth geting a sample taken from your fuel tank or filter and getting it tested.

haven't heard of anyone with similar issue

Popped €88 diesel in the night before

    Next journey following morning............

car went a mile and lost power

    coincidence?

have receipt from garage that it was defo diesel (or i used the diesel pump anyway)

Notify the garage and offer them a sample as well.

Had a 2013 i40 in the past, same 1.7 diesel as your Tucson. I had a load of other sh1t going on but I lost all 4 injectors in one go due to the High pressure pump falling to bits and lots of metal going through the injectors.

Think it cost me 800 quid for 4 refurbished injectors and a second hand high pressure pump supplied and fitted.

My car's engine subsequently had spun big end bearings very shortly after that repair, not relevant to your issue and unlikely that will happen to you because as I said there was much more going on with my 1.7crdi.

I'd go with Injectors and pump, fuel filter is a given.

Did some thread digging and there's a very knowledgeable member who knew exactly what my issue was, before it had a catastrophic failure. I didn't pay attention though.

Username is Hellrazer if you want to try contact him he could probably help you out the most.

P.S - anyone goes to view an i40 with 131-L-578 take a very wide berth lol

Brilliant - thank you so much 👍️

Cruel irony is i was on the way to complete a trade-in for a 2022 Hyundai....😱

You could not make it up......🙃

Dealer might still take it as trade-in if they can fix it for less than it would cost you? No harm in talking to them anyway. He probably had a customer lined up for your car.

Pricewise Ive sent you a pm. But Id be looking at a second opinion. Never seen 4 injectors fail all at once on that engine. The fuel pump issue was supposed to be rectified on the tucson so I doubt its that.

It also sounds a bit strange that you just filled it and then it stopped - are you 100% sure you didnt put petrol in it by mistake?? The fact that it made a mile or so sounds suspicious.

    Thank you @Hellrazer

I use a fuel card so i was able to login to confirm the delivery was from a diesel pump at the garage (assuming this was in fact diesel.....!!!)

Strange its morning after a fuel top up though but may not be related i guess

No issues in 20 mile driving after the top up
