Microsoft Outlook becoming a black screen....?

For the last couple of weeks, intermittently, Microsoft Outlook switches to a black screen, with the interface screen reduced to a small icon in the top left-hand corner.

Above this in brackets, it says (Outlook not responding)

When I click X, I choose the option to close the program. While it is doing so, it sends info to Microsoft about the problem.

I can then reopen the program and start again.

How might I repair this problem?

Try:

File>>Options>>Advanced , here scroll down to Display and check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

There is no Display option under Advanced. I've Googled it and I see what you mean. But, it must be in an older version of Outlook? Or, maybe it's hidden somewhere else now.

Also, sometimes when I try to reopen Outlook, I can't. I have to go Ctrl/Alt/Delete and close it fully in Task Manager before I can reopen it.

MS claim that this option is there starting from 2013-to-present(MS365)

I have it on ProPlus2016, will be able to confirm if same on MS365 on Mon

Based on that, perhaps try run repair or reinstall

I downloaded a tool called "Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant" and selected the fault (from a list) closest to mine.

It hasn't crashed for a few days.

That "good old aunt" MS SARA 😊 ?!

Effectively it does repair on installation, depending on "fault" you selected. The difference is - you have to install it and give some "permissions"...

Did the "Display" setting appear in options menu ?

In File/Options/Advanced, I see from top to bottom...

Chek your Word/Excel for same

Display is in both Word and PowerPoint, but not in Outlook.
