I messages a couple of old school friends on facebook a year or so back and both returned a "friend acceptance " to me (one about a year after I messaged him )

I didn't request to be a "friend"and so don't understand how they "accepted my friend request"

I just wanted them to reply to my message.

I did reply to one of them by commenting on his feed and got a short reply whilst the other ignored me (apparently) for a year or so and has just now "accepted my friend request"

I don't understand how this works and only opened the facebook account so as to contact them ,not using it at all otherwise.
