    Hi guys

My mum has an old JVC CA E21L hifi system. The JVC AL E21 turntable that is connected to it doesn't seem to work any more.

Would the Project PRIMARY E Black work with this system ok?

And what is the best price you could do with delivery to Dublin?

    Thanks

    Hi Nialldiho.

    Thanks for the post.

To be honest I can't to find any images that show me how the turntable is connected to the rest of system.

I've seen a few images of the front page of the service manual off of Ebay and it doesn't show the turntable, so it may have been an added extra.

Would it be possible to have a look and see if it is connected with phono cables or via a ribbon type connector please.

If it's the phono cable type then the turntable can be replaced. I would then need to try and work out if the pre amp for the turntable is in the turntable or the amp section of the amp. One or the other will need to have this for the turntable to play at the correct volumes.

I've hunted and I think the only way to check if a pre amp is built into the amp is try a turntable on it.

The Primary E has no built in pre amp so you would need the amp to have one or to purchase a sperate one. However if the amp has one and you would not require an external one.

You can purchase a turntable with the pre map built in but if the amp then has its own one built in both phono stages will not work together and it would sound horrible.

I'll see what else I can try and find out about your system but there is very very little info online due to the age of the unit.

    Thanks so much Kenny!

The turntable is connected via phono. Its power is also connected to the back of the hifi.

It seems pretty light and basic so I assume there is no pre-amp built in.

    Hi nialldinho,

Thanks for getting back to us.

I would doubt that the system has a pre amplifier built in to be honest. If you were to add in the Project you would need a separate pre amplifier as well. Or you could look at something like the Audio Tehnica LP60XUSB which has a built in pre amp:

Let me know what you think!

    Kind regards

    David

    Thanks David.

Were they made differently back then? There certainly doesn't seem to be anything substantial built into the exist turntable.

If it's not as simple as just plugging in to play then I probably won't bother as it's expensive enough already!

    Hi Nialldinho.

It not a case of being built different. As today you can still get a turntable which has no phono stage on board and one that does. The phono stage is just be a little circuit board and can be pretty light.

With a lot of older products there is very little information available which makes it difficult to work out the specs.

I would say the LP60XUSB mentioned above will do the trick as it has the built in phono stage and if it turns out to be built into your amp there is a switch on the LP60 to turns its one off.
