    RTE2 has been blocked for FIFA World Cup coverage on Saorsat both during the tournament and in the preview programmes.

    Yet the games RTE shows on the RTE News Channel are unrestricted?

    Either RTE has the rights to show the games on its platforms or it doesn’t? Seems an odd one… can anyone offer an explanation?

    Strange indeed as all matches on both channels geo blocked here online in N. Ireland via RTE Player and RTE News app.

    Also URC matches on TG4 via Freeview in N. Ireland are in the clear but geo blocked online via TG4 app. I guess this may be to stop viewers in Britain watching them.

    It might really be a simple mistake eg the person responsible for the blocking not knowing there were matches on the RTE News channel. (After all, it’s a news channel!).

    Back in the day, on Virgin Media, you got odd things happening when UTV was still available on the platform - when tournaments were shown on UTV and ITV4 you would get matches on ITV4 blacked but matches in the same tournament on UTV in the clear - because there was an instruction from ITV to block sports on ITV4 but no instruction to do so on UTV. What the underlying reason for that was I’m not sure.
