    Hi,

I have a learner permit and will buy a car soon. Does the accompanying driver have to have a full Irish license, or would a full license from another EU country be OK?

    Thanks

It seems to be a bit of a grey area. The NDLS website gives details on how to exchange an EU licence for an irish one but the wording makes it seem optional.

How to Exchange a Foreign Driving Licence - National Driver Licence Service (ndls.ie)

And the rules for accompanied drivers state it must be full licence holder in the same class of vehicle without stating that it must be an irish one from what I can see. But I would check directly with the NDLS to avoid getting stung for a fine and penalty points and a hike in your insurance.

All EU licences are considered equal so you should be grand. Only really an issue if you have a crash etc.
