Website recommendations for Irish Family Tree?

    Hi Everyone,

Trying to start something for the folks for Christmas.

Started using MyHeritage and it came up with a "connection" to a lad in the states that it matched with my grandfather (definitely not him).

Before I go too far I'm wondering is there a better Irish version that could potentially have Irish matches?

    Thanks for your help.

Please don't rely on connections claimed by anyone online. Start with what you know and check censuses, civil and parish records.

It's a lot of cross-checking and back and forthing, but at least you know your information is solid.

All the better if you do DNA and that confirms it all.

If I were to choose one of the 'tree' sites, I would choose ancestry (with familysearch), but I would ignore unsourced stuff, or double check any alleged sources.

I like the myheritage because the pc software for it has the trees in a traditional up down format as opposed to left right. The software is very good. It can be expensive though once you go over 250 members- but hold out for good deals and sales..

you can access the Irish version of ancestry website and i think myheritage at the library computers for free. The free version of both at home is ok but more limited in its searching.

lots of other good free resources out there- census for recent tree and parish records for older 1800’s etc.

It really depends on what you want from it.

If you're looking to build a tree online somewhere, then Ancestry is the best bet because you can do it for free and there's no restriction on numbers. It's also easy to share with others.

However, any of these commercial sites will ultimately want you to have a subscription to get the best from them. They all cost a fair whack if you're only a casual user, and there are risks of making mistakes by just accepting what's in other people's trees, etc.

Familysearch is the Mormon site and they also have tree building but I do not advise using them as you cannot delete your own info and other people can modify it.

Have a read of our stickies. You might be better off with a software program on your pc rather than an online version.

Is ancestry free? Looked at website and it mentioned 14 day free trial.

You can register a free account and use the tree part of it for free indefinitely.

If you want to access their records database, then it costs money.

If you look in our offers thread, there's a deal for a very small amount of money for 3 months, which would be a good start. You don't need to have a subscription full time.
