Behind that nut, I presume I can add a shower hose? Also what’s the button for?

Ya. Used to see them alot. The button changes flow between taps and shower.

The fact that someone put a blank fitting on the outlet for the shower would suggest that the diverter is faulty. The mixer set might need to be replaced before it can be used for a shower
