Heat only rads and not cylinder from back boiler?

    Hi,

I have a back boiler heating rads and cylinder. I see above the pump is a valve going up to the cylinder. If I turn this valve off, will it just redirect the heat from the cylinder or not heat it in the first place?

Thing is, I have an electric shower and rarely use the bath or hot water (we have dishwasher) so I’d like to use the energy from burning coal to keep the rads nice and toasty and get the best efficiency for my fuel. Is this possible to do and would that be the correct valve? Is it dangerous in any way?

I would be very nervous about doing this. The cylinder can absorb a lot of heat when the fire is high. The problem with a coal fire is they the heat source can’t be turned off quickly as it can with gas or oil.

this heat is not lost. I’d you don’t use the hot water, it will be released to the house as the cylinder cools. ;how long this will take will depend on his well insulated the cylinder is.

it would be wise to get the advice of an experienced plumber before turning anything.

That’s a good point about the heat being released over time anyway and I’m definitely erring on the side of caution so no valves will be turning before a plumbers say so as I’m just learning about all of this for the first time.

There’s 12 rads in the house but they need a flush so I’m careful not to have the fire going too strong as the cylinder is taking most of the heat for now. Would be nice to have good hot rads in the evenings with a steady fire tho. Just hoping when everything is flushed that I can keep them hot enough.
