oil tank on roof?

I looked at a house for sale and while they have oil fired central heating, I didn't see the oil tank. I asked the Estate Agent and they said it was on the roof. (there was no ladder to access the roof). It was night time so maybe it would be visible during the day.

But this sounds totally irregular to me, and potentially hazardous?

Must be a fairly old house?

I've seen it done in smaller terraced houses, where a retrofit would have been carried out, and the tank would have been up on top of a flat roof extension.

Theres plenty rules and regs regarding separation distances nowadays, but that could have been done in the early 90's.

If you're serious about buying you'll be getting an engineer to inspect it, so highlight your concern to him.

Contact your insurers and ask them for advice on it.

I see it every now and then. I am uncertain if its allowable (my gut feeling is thats its not), I always write it up as a concern. The main concern in any installation is spillage and protection from fire. Very difficult to achieve on a roof.

Perhaps if bunded, properly supported and accessible. Maybe an installer on here might have up-to-date information on this.
