Overflow hot water tank in attic splashing on the floor

I'm not a plumber but I bought this house a few years ago so I'm not sure how this ended up like this. That picture is an overflow tank for my main water tank in the attic. What I find odd is that additional pipe hanging over it, when the rads are on it drips water like so into that overflow tank, which then takes the water outside by spilling it from the roof(I'm not sure why it does not go into the gutters). I've noticed its a little wet on the floor around this small overflow tank. Does this seem normal, I've had a plumber look at this before and he said it was ok. What do you guys think, why does that pipe have two holes like that?

No, it's not normal, it's got some issues, that's for sure.

Firstly, there should not be a continuous flow in that tank when the rads are on. It might be a sign of a leak in the pipework. That "spray bar effect" isn't right either - the water should enter the tank via the nozzle on the far right of the photo and not be splashing around. The splashing shouldn't be happening either - it's creating damp on the insulation and pipe-work - we can see that from the blue-green corroded colour of the overflow pipe on the far left. And finally that tank should probably be covered to prevent dust and creatures from entering as well as to control the moisture.

I'd be recommending that you lower that "spray-head" to start - lessen the splashing and then worry about the rest when you can get a plumber to check why it's running in the first place.

it looks like your system is pitching

it could be as simple as reducing the pump speed

but best to get a plumber to check it out as you are constantly adding fresh water to your system which causes other issues

So that pip to the right does spill out water from the main water tank. Thats the tank that fills up when I run the taps. The pipe you see leaking water in the photo does not come from that tank. That pipe seems to only run when the hot water and radiators run, and the water dripping out is hot.

@jimf is correct here - it's pitching. Best have it all looked at again!
