Water Pump Keeps Turning on and off again when not using water - Possible Return Valve Issue?

As above really, the water pump keeps kicking in for around 5 seconds every minute or so. Any thoughts from those with knowledge as to what the cause may be?

No sign of leaking water anywhere in the house but the noise is driving me mad and I'm sure it will be worse throughput the night

Do you have an expansion vessel on your water pump? Mine had failed recently, was full of water, and was tripping pump to run with no demand for water regularly.

Your looking for something like this https://www.screwfix.ie/p/flomasta-potable-expansion-vessel-18ltr/148KK they can be smaller larger or a different colour but essentially a large steel cylinder attached to the same pipe work as the pump often quite near it.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Do you have an unused shower in the house? This happened to me a while back and the issue was a shower in the spare room that was rarely used - not sure exactly what the issue was, possibly an air lock or air getting back to the pump or something like that, but either way it was triggering the pump. It was resolved by just running the shower and taps for a few minutes in that room, there was a few splutters at first and then the entire system went back to normal

I had similar recently and found it was the pump's airlock sensor. I ran the taps on our rarely used bath (after trying a bunch of others) got a nice big sputter of air and then the pump stopped heaving.

The toilet cistern is a common point for a leaky valve, only takes a few drops for the pump to kick in.

Listen closely to each cistern and you’ll hear the drip.

Thanks all, it was indeed a return valve issue so our plumber is off to get it sorted
