Nature locations around Lough Ree

I'm going to Lough Ree, mostly hoping to see some wildlife , birds, take some pictures. A lot of it, on the map, looks quite inaccessible. Could locals suggest any nice parks, walking trails, areas around the lake or even within reasonable radius. Somewhere I can generally get by with a car and have a nice day at? Thank…
