No water trap for dishwasher waste...bad smell

    Hi,

Picture attached shows the scene under my kitchen sink. The pipe on the left is for the waste water hose from the dishwasher, but if you follow it down you can see it joins the main waste pipe below the U-bend, bypassing the water trap. The result is a nasty smell coming from the pipe, varies from barely-noticeable to the mother of all stink. I had the dishwasher hose going into the pipe and sealed it up nicely, but recently replaced the dishwasher and this time I cannot seem to get a good seal. I have had to give up and turn off the dishwasher and just seal up the top of the pipe with tape.

I think I have two options here:

I could get a hose connectors like this or this and jam it onto the top of the pipe, connect the hose to that. Would this work?

Alternative might be to cut the pipe down and attach an s-bend, something like this. Is this a better idea than the hose connectors? Bearing in mind it is extremely awkward reaching in there, the less work I have to do the better :)

    Any other alternatives?

    Thanks
