Ryanair tips and tricks

    Hi,

I have not flown Ryanair in a few years. I was trying to book European flights just there but there were so many added costs and options.

Anyone got advice on what to look out for and what to avoid? For example, it seemed to be forcing me to pay for seats during booking (not really bothered where I sit) and mentioned faster security lanes and better boarding pass processes. There seems to be one price at the start for all these add-ons - 35 quid each flight.

I am not sure what I can carry for free onboard but I do want a 20kg check-in bag.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

The only bag you can carry free on board is a small bag that goes underneath the seat in front of you plus a duty free bag I’m pretty sure is allowed, nothing in the overhead compartment though. that’s their value fare.

Their regular fare gives you priority boarding, a 10kg cabin bag that goes in the overhead compartment, a small bag that goes under the seat in front of you & a selected seat included

Their Plus fare includes a small bag under the seat in front, a selected seat & a 20kg checked bag

so you are looking at their plus fair OR select their value fare & add a checked 20kg bag during the process & go with whatever is cheaper if not bothered with where you sit, they’ll randomly assign a seat when you do online check in

My main tip for Ryanair is always wait for the free seat at check in (24 hours before the flight) as chances are you’ll get an aisle/window seat near the front of the aircraft. And in the off chance that you get lumbered with a bad seat, then you can pay for your preferred choice. It’s worth the gamble unless you really need to sit at a specific seat.

Ryanair is fantastic to travel with, if you play by their rules. Which just require a bit of attention.

You don’t have to pay for any extras. Nothing is forced on you, it’s a choice. They certainly push them but nothing forced.

The app is great to work with, I find the site to be harder work and more likely to fall into the ‘extras trap’.

Travel light, travel easy. Play by the rules and you can travel bloody everywhere for super cheap.

Source: I do about 30 flights a year with them.

Just keep saying no to everything, is my rule.

The only exception is you need to figure out is what bag(s) you need, and select/pay those appropriately.

Use Skyscanner to set alerts for the flights you want and that'll let you know when they drop price, I find it handy when I'm not tied to dates. (don't book with them just use the alerts)

Thanks all. Great tips. I was doing a dummy booking and kept having to make choices that I thought could haunt me later.

I have had recent trouble checking in on the app using data. I them got on the stansted express wifi and it allowed me to do so

if checking a bike in, make sure is in a small box. they barely fit into the cargo hold on a lot of planes
