International Men’s Day is celebrated annually on 19th November. It is an opportunity for everyone to reflect on and celebrate the men in their lives and to consider the many positive contributions that men make to family, community, culture and society.

This year, the Men’s Development Network, encouraged everyone to #CelebrateMen on #IMD2021 through social media posts.

    THE ASK?

We simply invited them to do the following:

    1. Identify one man (first name only) whose caring qualities you wish to celebrate.

    2. Highlight two of his caring qualities in a video or text post on your social media channels.

    3. Nominate three of your friends/family to do the same (and donate to MDN if you wish).

We hoped that sharing these sentiments will encourage new conversations that support our mission: “Better Lives for Men, Better Lives for All”.

    ====

"“While the majority of men across Ireland lead positive, healthy lives and are excellent role models, there are men in need of change"

You don't tend to hear organisations for women saying such things about women for International Women’s Day.

19th November marks International Men's Day, which aims to highlight the positive effects that men bring to their communities, as well as raising awareness of men's health issues and wellbeing. EDI are delighted to bring you a bundle of sessions aimed at men looking to mind their health and wellbeing, including a webinar, a share & support sessions with members of UCD's Mental Health & Wellbeing Support Colleagues, a yoga session focused on breath work and a collaboration with Platform 55 on Paternity Matters. Read below to find out more and register on the EDI Training & Events Calendar

Webinar: Men Looking After Their Mental Wellbeing

    Friday 18th November, 11am - 12pm

Mental health is a normal part of daily life, in the same way as physical health. The stigma around seeking help for mental health is gradually declining, but there is still lots of work to be done, especially when it comes to men, who on average pay less attention to their health compared to women. A 2020 survey carried out by the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) revealed that only 3 in 10 Irish men said they would attend counselling or psychotherapy.

This webinar develops awareness of the context and the positive impact small changes today can have on attendees’ quality of life today as well as in the future. The session will provide advice and tips for men on protecting and supporting their mental health and wellbeing. Relevant support internal and external to UCD will also be signposted to participants.

Everyone is welcome to join, however the content is tailored particularly to men.

This session is complemented by the Share & Support workshop run by UCD’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Support Colleagues and virtual Yoga for Men's Mental Wellbeing.

Share & Support Session for Men

    Monday 21st November, 11am - 11:45am

For International Men's Day, UCD’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Support Colleagues are hosting a virtual 'Share & Support' session for men. At this informal and fully confidential session, participants are invited to share their experiences, perspectives and insights so that we can support and learn from each other at this time.

    Overview:

    • Introduction & ice-breaker
    • Group-sharing guidelines
    • Sharing experiences & support
    • Closing

Places are limited as this is a small group session. The session will take place on Zoom with cameras on or off, as preferred.

Breathe: Yoga for Men's Mental Wellbeing

    Tuesday 22nd  November, 2pm - 3pm

Join qualified yoga instructor Tom for a virtual 1-hour Yoga session. The session is open to all levels including beginners and will focus on breathe work.

The yoga class will take place over Zoom between 2pm and 3pm and participants are welcome to leave their cameras on or off as they prefer.

    Webinar: Paternity Matters

    Wednesday 23rd November, 2pm - 4pm

UCD have also secured a number of places on the "Paternity Matters" virtual workshop run by Platform55 on 23 November for those who have recently returned from paternity or adoptive leave, or who have a very young family. It gives you the chance to connect with other dads and parents who are at a similar life stage. Topics include values, setting boundaries between work and home, crucial conversations and working as a team at home. If interested in a place, please email edi@ucd.ie

    Everywoman Tech Hub

    Friday 18th November, 4pm

UCD Staff can register for free at this Everywoman Tech Hub webinar.

    WEBINAR: Male Managers as Allies

In any inclusive workplace, a male line manager has a dual role: leading his team effectively to meet the organisation’s goals, and being a male ally to women at all levels. What does male allyship look like within this context, and what actions — from calling out micro-aggressions to looking out for imposter feelings in female co-workers — will make the biggest positive different to tech women working in male dominated teams or organisations? Join this discussion as we explore the idea of conscious leadership and the future of male allyship in the tech universe.

International Men’s Day 2022 Technological HE Sector Launch New Podcast

Male leaders across the technological higher education sector in Ireland have come together to discuss why gender equality matters for men in a new podcast released to mark International Men's Day 2022.

The podcast, Why Gender Equality is for Men too, featuring participants from South East Technological University, Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Munster Technological University, Technological University of the Shannon, Technological University Dublin, Dundalk Institute of Technology and the Higher Education Authority, is a collective approach to examining the role of men in achieving gender equality in the sector.

In a wide ranging discussion, the contributors discussed their own personal journeys and reflections on gender equality, what men can do to improve gender equality at their respective institutions, why men are sometimes reluctant to get involved in gender equality work, why allyship is critical, gender quotas and the concept of meritocracy, and the benefits of gender equality for men themselves.

Speaking on International Men’s Day, Dr Ross Woods, Head of the Centre of Excellence for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Higher Education Authority said, “Gender inequality is an issue which affects everyone. While we’ve made great advances in higher education in recent years, it is often our female colleagues who have carried that load. International Men’s Day is a good opportunity to highlight the vital role of male staff in supporting and advancing this agenda”.

David Denieffe, VP Academic Affairs (Student Life, Teaching and Learning) SETU welcomed the podcast saying, “I was delighted to contribute to the podcast, alongside my colleagues from across technological higher education. It provided us with an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of hearing men’s voices and support for gender equality. We hope this serves as a reflection on the necessity for men’s commitment to gender equality on this International Men’s Day”.

The podcast was hosted by Dr Ross Woods, Head of the Centre of Excellence for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Higher Education Authority. Ross was joined by colleagues from across the HE sector included David Denieffe, VP Academic Affairs (Student Life, Teaching and Learning) at SETU, David Smith, President of IADT, Michael Loftus, VP External Affairs at MTU, Dr Liam Brown, VP Research Development & Innovation at TUS, Dr Martin McHugh, Head of the Department of Visual and Human-Centred Computing at Dundalk Institute of Technology, and Dr Philip Owende, Assistant Head of Academic Affairs at TU Dublin.

The podcast is available at the following links:

International Men's Day at SETU Carlow Campus

This year, International Men’s Day will be held on; Saturday 19 November 2022, and SETU Carlow Campus is holding an event in the Central Services Building on the Carlow Campus, (on the tiered seating downstairs by the Shack and entrance to the Engineering block). Taking place from 12-1pm on Friday November 18th, Make Time for Mates; is organised by Karolyn McDonnell of the National Centre for Men's Health and Alannah Somers of the Student Music Society who is also performing at the event.

This year, the theme for International Men’s Day is ;Celebrating Mateship” and the aim is to inspire more men to “make time for mates”.

Each year International Mens Day November 19th focuses and celebrates the following objectives:

    • Valuing male role models
    • Acknowledging the contribution of men and boys
    • Improving male health
    • Tackling discrimination and disadvantage
    • Fostering positive gender relations
    • Making the world a safer place for everyone

Our seriously talented and committed musicians in the Music Society have devised a set list for this special day, inspired by influential men. We have also created a digital loop with contributions from staff and students telling us what #mateship means to them. There will be goodies for attendees and the event is an opportunity to #maketime4mates, chill out for an hour and have a bit of fun and entertainment on campus to mark the contribution that men make to our lives, community and society.

In addition, the Mens Development Network are launching the results of their MAN (Men's Attitudes Now) Survey with special guest Brent Pope. The findings provide interesting insights into male concepts of masculinity and gender, how men see their role in society, and reflections on their health and wellbeing, relationships, and more. This launch takes place on Friday November 18th at 10.30am until 12noon and the National Centre for Mens Health based in SETU Carlow campus is delighted to promote and support.

Please click here to view the invite and go to the registration link here »

The details are a bit vague but the Men's Development Network are behind the White Ribbon Campaign event mentioned above i.e. which is about reducing male violence against women.

International Men’s Day Event – Friday 18th November

We would like to invite you to celebrate International Men’s Day with Health Professional, Facilitator and Coach Jack Kavanagh in the Appellate Moot Courtroom, 3rd Floor, Glucksman  Library on Friday 18th November from 1-2pm.

The theme for 2022 is “Helping Men and Boys

Having suffered a catastrophic spinal-cord injury aged 20, which left him with just 15% muscle function, Jack Kavanagh cares deeply about health & wellbeing as drivers for resilience and performance. It is these topics that he focuses on in his engaging talks, along with the need to cultivate diverse and inclusive environments where people belong and are valued just as they are.

Jack is a popular speaker known for his humility, insight and wisdom. He describes himself as an ‘optimistic realist’ – someone who recognises the realities of life’s challenges but who strives to confront and overcome his perceived limitations and, in doing so, inspire others to do the same.
