Is this difficult/costly to do. Looking at getting a small second hand van ie caddy, doblo, for private use but not sure of process involved if anyone could give me a rough idea what's involved

Insurance can be tricky for some people, check it out first, after that taxing a van privately will be based on the old cc rates, even if it's 08 or newer, shouldn't be a problem. It'll still need a CVRT rather than an NCT.

Your biggest problem will be trying to insurance it for private use. Many insurance companies will still deem it a commerical vehicle irrespective of how it's taxed.

Just get a passenger version of a van. Fiat Qubo, Citroen Berlingo Multispace, Renault Kangoo Kar etc, most have seats that fold flat or are removable.
