Investigation into possible tornadic activity around Foulksmills , Co Wexford , 2 Nov 2022

Would be great if contributors have any information, links, pictures, charts or thoughts on the possible tornadic event ( or straight line winds ) in Foulksmills Co Wexford from last Wednesday.

For now just putting down some facts as I know them activity would seem to have been between 13.00 and 13.30 from reports on Twitter.

Reports of gusts from micker844posts of 76km/h at his station in Waterford and 104km/h at Waterford airport at 12.07, Johnstown castle was getting gusts of around 83 km/h up to the the 13,00 obs, no report again until 15.00.

spookwoman had a post at 14.09 ( see below, can see the rain radar returns below of a squall feature, although perhaps not technically a squall line but a line of clouds producing heavy precipitation accompanied by strong winds and possibly some thunderstorms although they would appear to have been brief) not much sferic activity showing up overland in the SE at the time but their was activity just off the Waterford coast around 13.00 maybe this was associated with the squall that spookwoman reported. It was travelling in a SW direction which would bring it roughly in the Foulksmill direction. Earlier Sat pic shows the big clouds that produced the heavy rain and less cloudy on the later pic ( -1hr for Irish time ) all travelling very quickly and as can be seen by twitter videos it cleared quickly once the backend of the front went through. If the event took place between 13.00 and 14.00 then the radar would suggest that all the rain had gone through and perhaps all the cloud ?? Is this the right time ?? Could this have been more of a straight line wind or downburst ??

The charts were indicating the possibility of thunderstorm's that day more so following the front in the unstable air with the following cold uppers. Shear was quite evident that day also.

Some posts on Twitter : Interesting comment ' one those sheets of cladding came from 300 metres away and beside the gateway one was wrapped around a tree in the opposite direction it came from', which could indicate tornadic activity.

I know that one of the main things they look for is scatter in all directions, more or less been spun out by the tornado as opposed to a straight line wind where more or less everything broken gets pushed over in the one general direction.

A local farmer has said “tornado” like conditions in Co Wexford today have left a path of destruction in its wake.

Speaking to South East Radio this afternoon, Willie John Kehoe said the damage occurred in the Foulksmills and Clongeen area.

“There was significant damage done here in the afternoon, it looks like a tornado came through. It has levelled the whole farmyard, a big old house here and I believe down the road there’s a good few houses damaged,” he said.

“There were other sheds knocked, it’s in a line of about 100 metres wide and it’s just pure destruction the whole way along. I got a phone call from a cousin of mine here, a farmer in his yard and he said you’d have to see it to believe it and there’s not a sheet of galvinised left on the new shed.

“Everything in the old part of the yard was levelled, the garden walls were levelled, big tress that have stood for hundreds of years they’re just completely, completely not there.”

Locals. Or should say a haulier who knows the area and farms very well, said it started in the townsland of Balliniry, Fethard and then moved on for Clongeen, Foulksmills. It stopped somewhere in that path between Balliniry and Clongeen for a time.

Haven't got times or where or when it stopped and started again but it was bad in Balliniry and it was bad again above Clongeen to just above Foulksmills village.

I was there the following morning around Clongeen and Foulksmills and there was a definite path of destruction left. If on the path everything was destroyed. And then beside it all and around everywhere else the leaves were still on the trees, not a twig broken. It was like a barrier of zero between destruction and not.

Friends live in a Townland called Tinnerath and trampolines and sturdy cemented into the ground swingsets were thrown around their garden.

I don’t think it was the full whack of the winds associated with the event maybe just a graze at their location thankfully.

Just going on some tweets mention of damage in Ramsgrange which is the starting point on the expected path, mention of Ballycullane and the red pointer is where the person in the second video said the rear dash cam is looking towards Clongeen / Folkmills so the front dash cam might show the cloud base from which the expected tornado came from perhaps ( I can make out the date on the dash cam as 2-11-2022, the time 13:36:11 ?? wrong time ??.

The end of the line is Folksmills.

Also mention of damage in Gusserane. Saw another tweet , don't know how accurate or serious but said it might have started by the ferry which would put it in the general line also if it did. Just bits I am picking up from the tweets atm. Need more evidence to corroborate these bits from twitter /tik tok.

The Farmers journal link shows pictures of a farmers severely damaged sheds in Baliniry, Ramsgrange, this would tally with what Say my name said of the report from the haulier , so that is a good idea of near the starting point ( assuming it is one tornado ).

Video of what the conditions were like in Wexford that day, don't have a time for the video but will try to find out.

That would be on the path too.

It went north of the villages of Clongeen and Foulksmills but just south of the main road splitting to Clongeen/Wellington Bridge and Foulksmills from Ballinaboola.

It's damage below the main roads V split you can see on the tweets above.

The most disturbing thing that I've observed in this video is that the videographer actually recorded it in landscape format but somehow the final video is still in portrait format. Scary stuff!
