(Re-)Registering a vehicle?

I inherited a Landrover Series 3 from my late dad. No logbook for it. He himself bought it from a local farmer about 30 years ago, with the intention of doing it up. Dad never got round to doing it up, and it's never been on the road that I've seen. He never told me who he got if from. So it's all a bit of a mystery really. There is definitely zero paperwork for it; I've checked several times. That said, I assume the original owner likely had it registered properly at one time. Is there a procedure the department of transport have for this type of scenario to re-register a vehicle, or to be able to transfer a vehicle ownership with no evidence of sale?

Any plates on it? Chassis/engine numbers visible?

ZJ plate, apparently Dublin City? Nothing comes up in Cartell for the plate.

Seems like you have a registration number. I'd be inclined to contact Shannon and ask their advice.

You can apply for a replacement tax book in your name.

Your local car tax office will have the necessary forms.

You'll have to fill out your details, the details of the vehicle, then it will need to be inspected by a main dealer to confirm the vehicle details are correct.

They will have to stamp and sign the form, then you will need to also get it signed and stamped by a peace commissioner.

You will also need to get a separate form stamped by the Gardai too.

You then submit these forms to the tax office and if everything is ok,they will issue you the book for the vehicle in your name.

I did it recently,it's a bit of a chore, but not really too difficult, the people in the motor tax office were helpful.

    Hope this helps.
