How do YOU , AD-Blue

One of my cars uses ad blue, I usually get a 10L from Aldi, and top it up every so often, usually when it gets to ½.

Anyway, noticed AD-Blue tank was at half, and topped up at a petrol stn.

Pump price was 121.9. that's when a few things happened.

1. The pump doesn't auto cut off.

2. I got a gurgling sound, and when I took the nosel out, AD-Blue pissêd out down the side of the car.

3. When I checked the DCI card invoice, I was billed €1.1538 + vat = €1.41⁹/l

Now, it's still cheaper than paying €30 for a 10L jug on the forecourt, but is it normal for fuel cards to be more expensive for AD-Blue than pump price, and is it normal that the pump doesn't auto stop.

I top it up when it needs 8-10 litres from a a forecourt pump, I just put in the required rounded to the nearest litre rather than brimming it.

Forecourt pumps slower than glacial drift, so not a job for a cold windy morning.

Having run into a blocked Adblue injector issue due to crystallisation, I prefer to run the tank down low before refilling to ensure that it gets a fresh fill each time. For the same reason, I prefer to buy it in sealed containers where ever I can get it cheapest as I'm not convinced that the forecourt pumps have much turnover. I'm sure that there are plenty of opinions on this but that's my take. I know the capacity of our tanks so I refill on quantity rather than brimming it but again, that's a matter of preference. One of our cars is a Peugeot which keeps the Adblue levels a closely guarded secret until it's refill time so there's little incentive to do a partial refill although its easy to work out consumption over time/distance.

It'd be worth chasing up the invoicing issue as there's likely to be a glitch in the system - it doesn't make sense to pay more than the pump price.

I'd report the missing auto cutoff to the forecourt staff - that doesn't sound right either.

Presume you washed the residue off the paintwork?

1. It's a newly built station, from the ground up, and is less than a year old, so I presume the AD-Blue is fresh enough.

2. It really isn't worth my time chasing up the price discrepancy, as I don't have the till receipt, and it's not worth my time and effort for ~€2

3. I didn't report the non shut-off, as it was my first time using a pump for AD-Blue, and didn't know if they had that feature or not.

4. Yup washed it off immediately.

I found dci often charge more than sign price for fuel and when you ring they drop price for a few months and then increase it again. It may be different if you are big company but as sole driver the price saving only lasted a few months so I ditched the card and went full EV. 80% savings that way

Buy ad blue in the 20l drums from agri merchants or something agri related. It will be much cheaper than forecourts or pumps. Last drums I got were €25 each from our local diesel/oil company when they were out filling the diesel tanks. Ad blue is mostly water I think. Just store it in yer garage out of direct sunlight and it will last. It will also freeze in heavy frost so be aware of that too if yer car is outside in very cold weather. I've seen a tank split when it froze a couple of years ago

3yrs ago, I picked up 6L drums of AD-Blue in Aldi for €4.99

That was 83¢/l, and I think pump prices back then were cheaper again.

The massive increase in price is due to some of the major companies that manufacturer it have halted production due to rising costs, it's causing some issues in the US and Australia, and even in Europe with YARA having difficulties producing AD-Blue.

I couldn't believe how much it's jumped in price, I got 2 of those drums as well and was raging when I found out that the two local pumps were much cheaper I think they were around 60c a litre. When I had the diesel car I only put in the maximum shown on the car display and never went over. None of that malarkey for me anymore having changed to a phev, I only visit a petrol station every 6 to 8 weeks now.

Anyone know if the date on the back of Adblue is the expiry or packed date? Just bought the Halfords one https://www.halfords.ie/motoring/engine-oils-fluids/fuel-oil-additives/air1-adblue-3.5l-pouch-683654.html and it's dated for 19 Dec 2022, others were Nov 2022 but doesn't say if its use by or what...

I don't know tbh but at 3.50 a litre that's very expensive. Do you get a pipe to put on the end of it? It definitely makes more sense to try and find a garage with an adblue pump it's definitely the cheapest way to buy it.
