I think there is very little doubt that Aldi is the cheapest supermarket. But Aldi do not offer coupons (10 of 50 etc) which other supermarkets do and these surveys don't factor that in. That said, even with the coupons, in some cases, Aldi still ends up being cheaper, depending on what you purchase.

I doubt it very much. An Aldi shop for me is in and around the same price as a Tesco one so I've switched to Lidl for most shops.

Aldi is cheaper statistically for a basket of goods that has been set by a panel of experts. that doesn't mean whatever you are buying personally, but it is cheaper for specified items.

Its no coincidence tesco price match certain essentials. I've noticed in dunnes too, the eggs milk etc. are approx. the same price. so the staples vary very little.

But then there are vouchers and clubcards etc. In dunnes last night i spent 90 euros but had a 10 euro and a 5 euro off voucher for that shop. im pretty happy that i would not have saved 15 euro by going to lidl for that shop. A couple of euros probably, but not 18% cheaper.

Which.co.uk do a very comprehensive study on shopping baskets between the supermarkets in the UK.

The latest study put Aldi as cheapest at £75.79 with a comparable typical basket costing £86.21 in Tesco. i.e. a typical Tesco shop costs £10 more.

Not a direct comparison to Ireland but similar unit pricing strategies are used by Aldi and Tesco here.

Whist Tesco price match Aldi on a certain number of items, it is highly selective. Certain ranges have no pricing matching at all and the differential to Aldi is significant in many of these cases. Plus Tesco don't offer any money off coupons which might justify paying more.

With regard to vouchers, Dunnes clearly offer the best vouchers but often the smarter option is to shop with Aldi. As the Irish Independent survey concluded, with their basket Aldi is 42pc cheaper than in SuperValu and Dunnes Stores. Clearly not a comprehensive study but gives an idea of how big the differential can be.

I'd say you are right to check the actual prices on the shelf.

The next trick is you put together a trolley of goods that are the same price in two supermarkets, one that gives vouchers and one that does not.

Then if you buy with vouchers you are saving 20%.

Cheapest supermarket is which has good special offers and also offers coupons on top of it ! Dunnes it is at the moment ! Also stocking up when things are on offer also helps..

I change the brand/variety regularly, watching as prices move and get an additional 15% off for getting five different products "in one delivery". You also have to buy in bulk. Next delivery has 12 kitchen rolls and 45 toilet rolls (Amazon presto), 6 shower gel (original source), 6 toothpaste (Colgate one) and 3 handwash (bayliss & Harding).
