Wind noise from chimney flue

House is on the side of a hill. Even with a moderate breeze there is a whistling and howling from the two chimneys in the house. It can get loud, always sounds like a storm is blowing outside.

Fire were open solid fuel with free-standing stoves in place now.

Would there be a way to reduce or eliminate the noise?

Yes, a chimney sweep can fit a storm cowl such as this one to reduce the noise and also help control the down-drafts.

You can fit a chimney balloon or chimney blocker when the chimney is not in use. This goes in the chimney hear the bottom.

A cheap version is a black bin bag stuffed with newspapers in it or an old jumper.

You can also get a top cowl with a chain where you can open and close the top from.the bottom

It's very inefficient to have drafts up a chimney that is not in use. If you can seal the stove at the bottom.when not in use it will save a large amount of warm air being wasted. An open fireplace consumes about 30% of the heat in the room.

Clever guy that Julius Caesar, he designed the best anti smoke cowl I've ever found, must be something to do with all the hypocausts in Roman times :-)
