Spasms after hip replacement surgery

    Hi,

I got my hip replaced 12 days. I'm relatively young for the operation (43), and was in good shape beforehand. I've been following the phsyio instructions, taking care not to overdo activity, and following precautions while sitting and sleeping. However, whilst sitting with the repaired leg stretched in front of me I have had what feels like a strong spasm, and it feels like the leg has shifted, though I don't think it has actually moved. This is accompanied by a weird painful sensation near the groin. When I manage to get to my feet it eases off and I'm able to walk with crutches on the leg again as before. Has anybody experienced this kind of thing? Do you know what causes it? I did ring the hospital, who defaulted to saying I should go to casualty. But given that there's at least a 12 hour wait at present, that'll do me more harm than good. It doesn't feel urgent right now, I'm just trying to figure out whats going on

    thanks in advance

Can you maybe go to a GP or minor injuries clinic?

GP might be able to assess if that’s normal or not.

The same thing happened to me after a back operation re the muscle spasms. It takes a while before the muscles settle down. Dr put me on a muscle relaxer.

I had heart surgery 6 years ago. I still get occasional spasms.

Relax, realise its only 12 days since your muscles got pulled around and cut through. And it will improve gradually

Is there an aftercare service available? I know recovery can be amazingly quick from these operations but generally you are supposed to keep walking on it shortly afterwards.

Try to keep up any exercises, and get support from gp.

It's very important in first few weeks to keep up the exercises to ensure long term recovery.

    Hi,

Had mine replaced when I was 39. After the op your leg shouldn't be straight when sitting or lying down. It should be propped on pillows with support for the back of the leg and from the knee down. A lot of muscles have been cut to get to the hip so sensations in the groin are normal and its a very uncomfortable feeling.

Best of luck with your recovery.
