There are more diesel classics than petrol (apparently)

The latest vehicle and driver stats came out last week for 2021. There are 54,680 vintage and veteran cars in that tax class. 26,476 are petrol but 28,093 are diesels.

Since diesel really only became mass market for cars in the mid-1980’s I don’t think this figure can be correct. There isn’t that many 300D’s and diesel series Land Rovers here.

Or do vintage trucks come under this tax too? The report is a bit scant on details on places

Some could be vintage tractors too, very popular in the country, can nearly outnumber the cars at some shows.

One of my own classics is diesel powered too,so they are out there.

Aren't there a lot of "vintage" cars driving around that aren't vintage. Plenty of modern Land Rover's driving around on ZV plates, I'm sure that they all swapped the chassis and not just the VIN plate, and a few other cars on ZV plates when the model wasn't available to qualify for ZV plates.

Ya if those figures include vintage tractors then that's definitely the cause of the high diesel figures.

When the tax offices had that amnesty thing back a few years ago, lots of vintage cars were incorrectly put down as diesel ( engine cc was put down as 1cc).

Motorcheck.ie ZK 717 and you will see what I mean.

They were inundated so I suppose it was to save time.

Tractors would explain a lot of them alright. Hadn’t heard of that amnesty @hi5, when was it? What was it for?

It’s a pity that there is that much bad data on the system and knowing the DOT, there is no impetus for them to clean it up

Can you imagine bringing that yoke down to the VRT office.

Probably doesn't happen that much any more, but a lot of Irish classics were "converted" to diesel, and are still around - I remember being at shows and seeing (and hearing 😐️) lots of large saloons (Merc/BMW/Rolls/Bentley, etc) with Nissan Patrol (and similar) diesels. Might not be huge numbers overall, but probably helping to skew things a bit.

Electric, electric-petrol, along with steam were one of the propulsion methods in the early years of cars. This 1909 Baker Electric marketed particularly for women, was one example. It's owned by Jay Leno who's recovering from an accident with one of his cars. It could be one of those, but there's any number of occasional concept cars (Brigg & Stratton did a hybrid for a show in 1980), small volume specials, plus milk floats and similar low speed utility vehicles. Would be interesting to know.
