Why do speed cameras have to be visible? Why do people complain when they are “hidden”?

I’ve seen people moan about “hidden” speed vans catching them. That’s a good thing. Speed vans SHOULD be hidden to catch people who think it’s okay to speed once they’ll get away with it.

Why don’t we either (A) disguise our random speed cameras so drivers will be playing Russian roulette and won’t speed because they won’t know where they are or (B) have average speed cameras everywhere which will force people to slow down.

Speed kills. So slow down.

Their role is to be a visible deterrent, if they're not visible then they are failing in their mandate, gardai can hide if they want to.

No, people will drive, you can't assume everyone will speed just because there isn't a camera watching. Plus thank the government their logic is usually ridiculous.

I'm not, and I don't, you asked a question and I answered it, the Government contract for the GoSafe vans was based on deterrent and detection, a big part of their job is just being seen.

Blaming speed for road deaths is equally ridiculous though, there's are an infinite number of contributing factors, speed is only one small part.

Did I say anywhere there was an issue? But they can't and won't, it's one thing having a garda covertly detect, it would be a whole different ball game having a private company do that, even our Government wouldn't risk that wave, plus there would be some serious legal ramifications.

If you think there might be a camera on any road then you’ll never speed.

Habitual speeders will lose their licence.

Speeding should be a mandatory court appearance with 6 points.

Change the law if you like, you asked a question about the current situation and I answered it, I’m neutral, I just know the law and the constitutional changes that would be needed to carry that out considering the gardai couldn’t do it and to involve a third party would require some colossal changes which no elected representative would be willing to undertake.

Speed in itself as big an issue as you’re making out tbh.
