I’ll hold my hands up and say my fitness is not good. Go for a walk everyday but no running etc. cycle an odd time but nothing major.

meself and a few of the lads (early 40’s) are looking to do Ballyboura and renting bikes. All novices

    what fitness levels are required?

    much danger involved for novices?

    ant hints or tips?

Minimal danger. Go up, hang out and enjoy. It's a great spot and run well. Plenty of short loops. Just ride at a controlled speed...to start at least!!

I was in Ballyhoura few months ago. Did Greenwood + Skills and Garrane loops on 2 separate days. In my view they are more XC-type of loops, decent fitness required as you'll be doing 20km+ offroad but nothing extreme either on the way up or down. They trails and loops are very clearly marked.

As a non cyclist you will most likely have to walk up the first hill. It is not that long but is relatively steep.
