Vinyl tile over tile?

I’ve an ugly tile floor in the kitchen - complete with mismatch tiles.

I’m not in a position to do a proper redo of it at the moment but wondering if vinyl tiles would be a good, medium-term solution.

But I’m not sure if there’s anything I should keep in mind before I do it?

Will the vinyl tiles adhere to the real tile, or should I put something in between? Would I need to do something to level out the height differences between the tiles and the grout?

Anything else to bear in mind?
