Newcastle to Dublin city centre commute. Best route?

    I'm planning to start cycling this route soon a few times a week (in at 8, back at 5). Google maps sends me up the R120 and onto the canal at the 12th lock.

    Anyone know if this is the best route or have other suggestions? I'm on a road bike and would be going at a decent pace.

    I've heard the canal can be a bit dodgy at times and not necessarily the fastest with kissing gates etc. Also a bit unsure about the R120 in the dark/wintery conditions.

    I'll cycle the route myself soon anyway to check it out but curious to hear any opinions.
