I have an open shed beside the house that I want to close off as the heavy rain beats in.

Herself is looking for something tasty but I'm watching the shillings

Was thinking about cladding an ordinary farm gate, is there anything else I could use on the gate such as recycled plastic or PVC sheets that would look nicer

Be very careful about cladding hinged gates as they'll act like a sail in the wind and be very dangerous.

    I hate them.

What are the measurements of the opening?

Don’t clad a hinged gate round a house. It’ll kill somebody. Put a roller door on and you’ll be finished with it

two x 15 foot openings, how much would 2 roller doors cost

Ya those sheeted gates if they get opened in the wind can really fly. If get a lad to make something get the receipt for farm related work (which the shed is used for of course). Draw back the vat, put the work against the tax for a few years.

My neighbour had a large roller blow in during a storm. Is it an issue??

I've got roller doors here. Great job - very secure too. Just need to make sure you've got room above the door way for the gear. Can't remember the price but I think it was in region of 1k - for a motorised unit. Szie would be 15'x15' roughly.

Would 2 sliding doors work for you - they could lslide past each other if necessary? If you really wanted you could inset a normal small door for quick access - but I'd put on a hydraulic door closer - they are a great job - protects against wind and keeps door closed so prevents animals and suchlike getting in.

Be careful cladding a gate as it adds serious weight to it. It might be a better idea to get a frame especially fabricated that is designed to take the weight of the cladding, with correct hinges and bolting. You could clad it it timber which might look nice and would allow an element of the winded through it if spaced. A fully sheeted door or even a roller door can catch a lot of wind and can be dangerous in a storm. So the exposure of the site needs to be access, don't take any changes with safety. You would probably be look at circa €1,500 each for a roller shutter with "wind lock" to cover these openings.

    @Anto_Meath

How does Wind Lock work Anto?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,670 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

It is a 'J', 'L' or 'T' shape lock that is clipped onto the end of some of the shutters inside the vertical track that prevents pull-out.

In the below you can see the wind lock rivetted to the shutter and held inside the track. When a heavy force tries to buckle the shutter and pull it out of the track the shoulders on the track prevent the lock from pulling out and therefore holds the shutter firm against heavy winds.

    .

    Can look like this:

We have them on ours. Direction wouldn't get full force of wind, but better looking at them than for them.
